Often called the Beatitudes, Jesus starts his Sermon on the Mount with eight sayings, each one beginning with "Blessed are the.... (persecuted, peacemakers, pure in heart, etc.
That word blessed literally means happy and we can take Jesus at his word that when we are living as peacemakers, striving to be pure in heart, etc., then we will indeed have that happiness that he promises us.
