Finding Happiness by Living Out the Sermon on the Mount
People are looking for happiness today more than ever. Technological advances have given us more free time, more entertainment, more information, more connections with others, constant connections to our work, and an overall supposedly easier lifestyle. But for all the improvements in our ever-changing world, are we really happier? Are you happy? Or is there something missing in your life?
Many of us have looked to possessions and wealth for happiness, only to find that after we have acquired the nice house, the fancy cars, the boats and RVs, the furniture, the electronics, and everything else we can think of, that we are still empty inside and still even more worried about our bank accounts and our security and our future. True happiness and contentment escaped us despite our passionate pursuit of all the stuff that was supposed to make us happy.
Another place we look to for happiness is other people -- our relationships, our work, our family, our friends. If only I can find Mr. or Ms. Right, we say to ourselves. If only I can find the right job or get the next promotion, then I will be happy. And when it gets right down to it, people are great and can certainly bring some happiness into our lives, but in the end they will often let us down. We are all human, we all make mistakes, and people will usually fall short of what you expect from them.
The list of things that people look to for happiness is a long one -- it's not just possessions and people but we also try to find happiness in all kinds of things like drugs legal and illegal, alcohol, and a myriad of addictive behaviors like over-eating, sexual promiscuity, and over-indulging in entertainment such as television, movies, video games, and even social media and the internet.
All of the above ultimately leave a person feeling empty; True happiness comes from living according to the eternal truths taught by Jesus. You will be blessed -- literally translated "happy" -- when you live according to my teachings, says Jesus.
Let's pursue happiness together by knowing Jesus and living the way he taught us. This is the very reason this website exists -- to help people find happiness by following the teachings of Jesus, especially those found in the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew Chapters 5-7.
